Chlamydia Screening in St Albans

Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea Screening

It is important to get tested for STIs like chlamydia and gonorrhoea every year or when you change sexual partners. Find out how Quadrant Pharmacy in St Albans can help with our chlamydia and gonorrhoea testing service.

What is Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea?

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are common STIs that can be caught or passed on by having unprotected sex. The best way to prevent catching or passing on these infections is by using condoms and getting tested regularly. If left untreated, both chlamydia and gonorrhoea can lead to serious health problems in both men and women.

What are the Symptoms of Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea?

The symptoms of chlamydia and gonorrhoea are often missed, which is why you should get tested every year or when you change sexual partners. It’s also important to be aware that if you develop any symptoms, they can include:

  • Pain when urinating
  • Unusual discharge
  • Pain in the tummy for women
  • Pain in the penis for men
  • In some cases, rectal pain or discharge and throat infections

If left untreated, chlamydia and gonorrhoea can lead to more serious health problems such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility.

What Does the Test Involve?

The test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea is simple and painless, plus it’s very reliable. The test involves giving either a urine sample or a swab test.

For the urine sample, you will need to collect a sample of your pee in a sample pot. The swab test involves gently wiping a small cotton bud on the potentially infected area; this could be inside the anus, vagina, or throat.

Men normally provide a urine sample, but women usually have either a swab or urine test. You can take a urine test or swab test at Quadrant Pharmacy, and the results will be ready in 7-10 days. If the test shows you have chlamydia or gonorrhoea, you’ll be able to start treatment.

Note that Quadrant Pharmacy provides urine sample kits.

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are effectively treated with antibiotics. Chlamydia is often treated with Azithromycin (single dose) or Doxycycline (daily capsules for a week), while gonorrhoea treatment typically involves a combination of antibiotics such as Ceftriaxone (an injection) and Azithromycin (oral dose). After treatment, abstain from sex for at least a week. Test and treat all recent sexual partners within the last 6 months to prevent re-infection.
