Protection Against Meningitis B for Students and Young Adults

Starting university, college or moving into shared accommodation is an exciting milestone. However, students and young adults are at a higher risk of meningococcal disease due to close contact with large groups of people living, studying and socialising together.

At Quadrant Pharmacy, we offer both NHS and Private Meningitis B vaccination services, helping you protect yourself against a serious infection that can develop rapidly and cause meningitis, septicaemia (blood poisoning) and sepsis.

What is Meningitis B?

Meningitis B is caused by meningococcal group B bacteria. Although rare, the infection can become life-threatening within hours and may lead to serious complications including:

  • Brain damage
  • Hearing loss
  • Limb amputations
  • Severe scarring
  • Sepsis
  • Death in severe cases

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways of protecting yourself against the disease.

NHS Meningitis B Vaccination Service

Quadrant Pharmacy is proud to provide the NHS Meningitis B Vaccination Service for eligible patients.

Free NHS Vaccination for Eligible Students

You may be entitled to receive the Meningitis B vaccine free of charge through the NHS if you are:

  • A Year 13 student eligible under the current NHS programme
  • Under 25 and starting university for the first time
  • Under 25 and moving into further education accommodation or halls of residence for the first time

Eligibility will be checked by our trained pharmacy team during your appointment.

NHS Vaccination Course

The NHS Meningitis B vaccination programme consists of:

  • 2 doses
  • Given at least 4 weeks apart

Private Meningitis B Vaccination Service

Not eligible for the NHS programme? Don’t worry.

Quadrant Pharmacy also offers a private Meningitis B vaccination service for anyone seeking additional protection against meningococcal disease.

This service is suitable for:

  • University students who do not meet NHS eligibility criteria
  • Young adults wanting extra reassurance before starting university
  • Parents looking to protect older teenagers
  • Anyone wishing to reduce their risk of Meningitis B infection

Private Vaccination Cost

£110 per dose

A full vaccination course requires:

  • 2 doses
  • Minimum 4 weeks apart

Have You Already Had the MenACWY Vaccine?

Many students received the MenACWY vaccine at school. While this vaccine protects against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y, it does not protect against Meningitis B. For the broadest protection against meningococcal disease, many young adults choose to receive both vaccinations.
